Very few Americans definitely want their country to get involved in the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, according to new polling from The Economist and YouGov. That is true across the political spectrum econ.st/4jVD4Os

If US military action causes the Iranian government to collapse or precipitates a civil war/widespread chaos similar to Syria, over 23 million refugees could flee. Does the world really want the largest refugee crisis in history? Even 1/10 of that would be a disaster.

"Forced regime change creates a power vacuum that is filled by the most violent forces in a society. It exacerbates ethnic tensions — especially when there is a foreign power picking winners and losers while being totally unfamiliar with a nation's complex social dynamics"

What a hot mess, the cost of which is paid by innocent civilians. What if, after all this, no one can produce evidence of nuclear weapon progress? Will any of these warmongers pick the tab?

Internet in near complete shutdown in Iran for 48 hours. I was able to briefly talk to my mother about 24 hours ago. Since then, complete blackout. The official reason given (as far as I understood it) is to "curtail Israel drone activity". #StopWarOnIran

These words—“Iran is at the point that it can produce a nuclear weapon within weeks to months”—appear nowhere in the testimony.

Early on, my primary fear from a US persecptive was precipitous regime collapse and ensuing chaos (with or without American intervention). Various indicators now tell me Iran is reconsolidating after being caught off-guard. Meaning: US intervention would be a BIG WAR, period.

Show this to Ted Cruz. He doesn’t know the population, but won’t hurt if he takes a look at people. (Video is from May 2025 and is not mine. This is Golestan Shopping Center) #StopWarOnIran

"We have no single recorded example in history of a state causing regime change with an air campaign... we had to invade Iraq to get regime change we couldn't do it from the air.... in terms of unconditional surrender, this is a laughable argument. We put Iranians in a position

Matt Duss and I have spent our careers on opposites sides of the aisle. Yet we're united in horror at the prospect of a direct armed conflict between Iran and America — and a determination to avert it. Our WaPo op-ed.

One more time, increasing budget deficit is inconsistent with lowering trade deficit, unless you are willing to accept a fall in investment. There is no economics in this statement. It is just accounting and arithmetics (and true regardless of the number/nature of trade deals).

Brian Albrecht (Brian Albrecht) consistently offers some of the sharpest takes on basic economics on X. His recent post is a gem: 🔗 economicforces.xyz/p/will-ai-skyr… Brian makes a simple but essential point, one I’ve tried (and failed) to make thousands of times when talking about

Nice thread. I’ll add a modification with a possible benefit (see below paper). Modification: pass some equity risk to Soc Sec benefits. Why? Because low wealth retirees have low stock market exposure, so it is efficient to have them bear some. mitmgmtfaculty.mit.edu/japarker/consu…

Free-market policies aren't always good, and they certainly aren't a cure-all. But as Milei is showing in Argentina, we've underrated their importance. noahpinion.blog/p/free-market-…
