Wrote the equations for our chips at age 25 in a burst of creativity. Turned out to be correct. Early nuggets of several ideas that layer turned into several inventions also came to me around that time. Take the time in your mid 20s to let your creativity roam wild.

Patrick Collison People mock the overconfidence of startup founders, but there's a reason for it. Only people who are naturally somewhat overconfident will take on problems that, when viewed rationally, would seem too hard.

No one ever got mental clarity without challenging themselves with harder problems No one ever got self-confident without increasing the difficulty of their training No one ever got wealthy without taking big risks and making difficult decisions In doubt, choose the scary path

One thing I notice in SF is the blurred lines between work and play time e.g. people performative coding at bars / parties signaling “hustle”. This is extremely peasant-coded and not conducive to great work imo. History’s elites and greats kept strict borders and took leisure

I feel like this is true and underrated. Imo living in a place where you don’t know the language can feel alienating for this reason. You miss out on those casual chats.

The rate of useful information someone can communicate per minute of conversation is hugely correlated with effectiveness. It’s not about talking speed. It’s about knowing what’s worth talking about, concision with those ideas, and knowing what the other person doesn’t yet know.
