I covered John Tory for eight years after assisting with reporting on the police investigation into Rob Ford. I stepped into my role at city hall during that absolute chaos. Please don’t for a minute think we take any pleasure in reporting these stories. We are human.

We also care deeply about telling stories in the public interest. Sometimes gossip is just gossip. Even when a tip is right, it doesn’t always meet our standards for reporting. That’s how it was with Ford & Tory and we’ll continue with every mayor as long as someone pays us to.

That is difficult work and it is important work. It is work that requires reporters to be doing this 24/7 like the absolutely terrific people in our city hall bureau David Rider Ben Spurr Alyshah Sanmati Hasham have been. Proud today and will be proud tomorrow of Toronto Star.
