Dear UofSC students, as you have seen the UNC events with Ida Bae Wells unfold do not think of it as an isolated incident. While thousands have called for buildings glorifying racists to be renamed, they continue to drag their feet and cater to the will of politicians + donors.

Politics and money control this university. Our BoT is a political arm of our state legislature, all appointed and elected by General Assembly members and our Governor. Y’all want to change things at USC? Let’s organize. Let’s vote. Let’s fight for change at our Carolina.

While VA + other states continue to reckon with Confederate statues on their public grounds, South Carolina drags its feet. It’s time to… ➡️Repeal the Heritage Act. ➡️Rename buildings named for Confederates and segregationists. ➡️Reclaim these spaces and create a better SC.

What happened yesterday when racists desecrated the Unsung Founders monument makes it clear that UNC must act now to address the demands issued by Black Student Movement to improve safety of Black students, faculty and staff.

The University of South Carolina community is #ReadyToRename buildings on campus that honor Confederates and segregationists. It is now up to Harris Pastides + USC admin to give the Commission’s report to the Board of Trustees to make the official commitment. Gamecocks, our fight has just begun.
