Today is the feast of St Maximilian Kolbe, a Polish Franciscan friar who was starved to death in Auschwitz along with nine others in retribution for an escape. He volunteered to take the place of a man who was married with a child. He led prayers in the cell until the end.

Today we remember St Maximilian Kolbe who died #onthisday in 1941, after offering his own life to save a fellow prisoner at Auschwitz-Birkenau. He is one of ten 20th-century Christian martyrs whose statues stand above the Abbey’s Great West Door. Discover more in this resource
