Counselors do so much for the students AND staff in the building. They are patient, kind, poised, and compassionate. They shoulder more grief, pain, and dysfunction than most of us can imagine, and they are invaluable to our schools. They deserve our recognition and respect.

Kids go just about anywhere for validation. If you want to connect with a kid… find reasons to praise them. We all like hanging around others who make us feel good about ourselves.

The best educators build connections with students and preserve hope. Our work is more complex than “relationships” but without relationships the other stuff doesn’t work. #TheTenMinutePrincipal

All the teachers out there deserve a great break. It won’t be a great break for all the kids, though. For some students, school is the best environment they are ever in. Their teachers are the most caring adults they are ever around. We can’t ever forget that.

I remember my own kid consistently talking about the teacher who is “nice.” I know there’s more to teaching than being nice… & I know that kids need to adapt to and learn from all sorts of teachers. I get it. But I appreciate the teachers who are nice… & so do the students.

When seeing educators doing amazing things online-sometimes rather than celebrate their success we get wrapped up in professional jealousy (PJ). PJ is a real thing and it drags you down & stresses you out. Guard your heart. Celebrate the talents of others, as well as your own.

Maslow applies to educators now more than ever. Leaders need to remember that when they’re talking about culture, mission, and all that stuff at the top of the pyramid... they have staff members & students who are worried about safety, security, and all that stuff at the bottom.
