In 1998, my team at HKUST built the world’s first multilingual voice browser in 8 languages - it was not open vocabulary as it relied on the vocabulary on the website content that had been loaded. This was a big deal then and many media and state leaders visited our lab to see

While we see the Dark Ages of moral and intellectual decline looming, we must not lose hope that one day there will be another Age of Enlightenment. Don’t lose heart my friends. We will fight for the light. #USDemocracy

Trump has unfathomably idiotic policy proposals. Many of them are impractical, illegal, or against the constitution. But because he is an unfathomable idiot himself and because only idiots are willing to work with him, he is also totally ineffective when it comes to implementing

The dearth of human reasoning with regard to matters both human and artificial makes me think that we urgently need better training for humans - or machines will surely surpass so many among us in terms of reasoning and even compassion. #USDemocracy #USElection2024

The Economist is endorsing Kamala Harris. By making Donald Trump leader of the free world, Americans would gamble with the economy, the rule of law and international peace. Voters who minimise the risks are deluding themselves econ.st/4fluZAw 👇

I voted for Kamala Harris without hesitation. When it comes to policy and personal integrity, the contrast could not be clearer, and I hope undecided voters with a history of supporting candidates in both parties join me. bloombg.org/4ecs0cX

Very excited to share our latest open source advancements in embodied AI from Meta FAIR: new work across touch perception, dexterity, and human interaction with robots. Crucially important capabilities on the journey towards Advanced Machine Intelligence. ai.meta.com/blog/fair-robo…

Why are we endorsing Kamala Harris? She has run an impressive campaign and seems to appreciate the need for centrist politics in America today. But, more importantly, a second Trump term comes with unacceptable risks. We explain why she gets our vote econ.st/48vkFUw

Was talking to a co-panelist yesterday who thought the *most* important issue in AI today is to regulate. I said perhaps it’s your bias as a lawyer. He then accused me of having “a bias towards innovation”. Well humanity survives because we (thankfully) have a bias towards

I have been working on AI ethics and governance since 2016 including with organisations such as the #IEEE #worldeconomicforum #UnitedNations. I am rather disappointed by the little progress that has been made in #AI #governance because there are too many people who just want

The counterpart to the #AI #governance work are the scientists working on mitigating algorithmic shortcomings such as bias, hallucinations, privacy leaks etc. They are doing the real work to prevent harm but they are much less known than those who know little but talk loudly.

Why do you need another benchmark for LLM hallucinations? Having studied its source and mitigation methods, it became apparent to us that we could never solve the problem if we go around in circles by conflating model "hallucination" with the "factuality" of the answers. So we
