A study from Daniel Kronauer's lab shows that a newly discovered “social fluid” appears to unite ant colonies across developmental stages into one superorganism. #RockefellerScience rockefeller.edu/news/33214-ant…

My latest story for National Geographic, inspired by a nature paper about something ant pupae have done for ages without ever being caught by myrmecologists, featuring among others Daniel Kronauer, Susanne Foitzik & @[email protected] aka Adria LeBoeuf! nationalgeographic.com/animals/articl…

This week the lab celebrated a cast of unlikely heroes: ant pupae! Here are two photos of Lasius ants tending to their pupae inside their subterranean nests in Woodstock, NY. In these species, pupae are enclosed in silken cocoons.

In many ant species, the pupae are “naked”, i.e., not enclosed in cocoons. The left image shows a nest chamber of the acrobat ant Crematogaster lineolata, the right that of Tetramorium immigrans.

The World War of the Ants is claiming millions of lives every day. But straight-up war is not the only way. Some species practice slavery, the most extreme division of labour. Today, we're looking at Polyergus, the most intense of the slaver ant tribes: kgs.link/SlaverAnts

This paper is far too cool to be in Cell. Did they steal it off the Current Biology editor's desk? doi.org/10.1016/j.cell…

An algorithm developed in part by Liat Shenhav, dubbed SCRuB, can distinguish native bacteria and viruses from contaminants—a powerful tool for researchers working with the microbiome. #RockefellerScience rockefeller.edu/news/34179-new…
