Painting and drawing decaying trees, detritus, downland, skyscapes, sculptural forms. Norman & Saxon churches are pretty interesting too!

Wood Walton church floats on a green island amid acres of churned dun fields and murmuring fenland. No one is around for miles. And in the 19th century, a lone bell rattling in the emptiness was the only way of alerting the living that you’d been buried alive. #thread

Beneath Hexham Abbey is the Anglo Saxon crypt which is 1300 years old. In part it is built from Roman stone - some of it decorated with pattern. Wilfred built the crypt to hold relics, including those of St. Andrew brought back from Rome in 679.

“Patagotitan stood at the outer limit of what terrestrial animals are capable of achieving in terms of size.” My essay for UnHerd on why the dinosaur currently on display at NHMdinolab is one of the most awesome things you are ever likely to see. unherd.com/2023/04/why-di…

Hurray! My love of landscape and pen and ink drawings are featured in this month’s @WiltshireLife together with a list of my favourite Wiltshire churches & woods. A flattering piece by simon heptinstall, but who doesn’t enjoy that? Marlborough Open Studios 2023 gets a mention too.

Such a shame to be closed this weekend. But, if & when you come next week/end, I hope you'll spend a few minutes to wander thro the garden, or sit on a bench for a moment. A few photos near the house. @SiobanCopp Rosemary Farrer Stephen Davis

I wrote about St Mary’s Kempley, Gloucestershire with its glorious Romanesque Frescoes in ‘The Stonemason’ 👇. It’s a place I’ve returned to often and in #churchgoing I focus on It’s ancient roof, the oldest in Britain.

Do you know why there are staircases that seemingly lead to nowhere inside medieval churches? If you don't, then please watch this short video to find out. For surviving in situ examples, then please see the next post in the thread below.
