I often hear that optical stereo-images are not suitable to create DEM of the flat accumulation areas of glaciers, because they lack contrast. Not true -at all- anymore with modern sensors like Pléiades. Upper Kronebreen, #svalbard. #PGO

What are #Jökulhlaups? These catastrophic glacier floods occur in #Iceland and have been associated with breakup of ice and rapid melting from volcanic eruptions under the icecaps, leaving behind traces that can be seen even today as kettle holes. PC:  Anirudha & Google Earth.

Flowing glaciers erode, transport and deposit material, and these images show glaciers flowing in Greenland today (left), sediments eroded and carried at the base of a Svalbard glacier (middle), and the landscapes that can be left behind when glaciers melt (right). #Geomorphology

This year’s MB for our monitored glaciers in Ny Ålesund was not as negative as the record year 2020. However for logistical reasons we made measurements in August. But melt recorded later on a neighboring glacier suggests that updated MB will be as negative as 2020, or even more.

The warmest summer since 1910 when record began, was brutal for glaciers in central #Svalbard, like the one supplying water to #Longyearbyen. In 1936-2019 period #Bogerbreen lost ~40% of its cover, and in 2022 it experienced the largest melt on record PC:1936 NPI, 2022 @_AgaNowak

50 shades of blue! Few things are more colorful than an iceberg bathing in midnight sun, a bright memory from last year’s fieldwork as we head into the polar night period in the north. PC: NPI #Svalbard #BlueIce #Iceberg #Austfonna

Great news! The 1936 images of Svalbard has just been integrated to TopoSvalbard! Explore how Svalbard has changed since then, especially glacier retreats and century-old features such as these 1936 looped moraines of Strømbreen in Dicksonfjord.

Jiehkkevárri is the highest mountain in the #LyngenAlps at 1834 m. The flat top of Jiehkkevárri is unlike many of the surrounding sharp peaks because it consists of glacial ice! It's name comes from the Sami word for glacier (jiehkki) and mountain (várri). P.C. Calvin Shackleton
