Bold prediction: Intuitive Surgical ($156B today) will be a more valuable company than JnJ ($385B today) in 10 years. No comment on the relative value of Andromeda Surgical to those two, but let's just say I'm optimistic.

Being politically partisan makes you stupid. If someone you perceive as being on the other side says something reasonable, you either have to argue against it (and thus be unreasonable) or misinterpret it (and thus be obtuse).

Just overheard in SF: “We’re approaching the end of summer. Soon we’ll get to fall and winter and it’ll be too cold.” Spotted the out-of-towner. People who live here know our summer (to the extent there is one) hasn’t started yet.

South SF has low key won big at SF’s expense. It’s an absolute boomtown, and not just biotech anymore. Stripe HQ moved to Oyster Point, and of course there’s also Andromeda Surgical

The goal of medtech is to help patients. If you’re a serial CEO/board member and have enriched yourself by tens of millions without launching a product that helped patients, you have failed your mission and are a net drain on the system. These shouldn’t be the people we idolize.

I’ve made the mistake of trying to “hire good people and give them room to do their jobs” and ending up “hiring professional fakers.” But I refuse to play the victim. I take full responsibility for the mistake of hiring them and the bigger mistake of letting them drive.

Founder mode is figuring out whatever is most holding the company back from being great, then jumping in regardless how low level the problem is and fixing it

It's funny how the people critical of founder mode didn't show up until Tuesday, after the holiday weekend.

People have criticized Founder Mode by pointing out that ~95% of founders execute poorly and fail. Are those people in Founder Mode? Yes. But it’s founder the verb, as in the sinking of a ship. The key is to avoid that Founder Mode and embrace the other Founder Mode.

Investors always want to know how your idea is defensible. The truth? There is rarely defensibility. There is only speed.

Almost ready for prime time

Two companies ago when Avail Medsystems (then called Nurep) applied to Y Combinator. We didn’t get in. Fortunately had better luck with the next company. It was 12 years ago but feels like another lifetime.
