I've now had three kids at @narrativesci and can vouch that we are a lovely and supportive place to work! Thanks Built In Chicago for noticing and naming us one of the Best Places to Work and Best Small Companies to Work for in 2021! builtinchicago.org/company/narrat…

You can actually improve your ability to make decisions, it’s super weird. It’s not just that you can make better decisions at specific moments, you can actually improve your ability to quickly make decisions that are more likely to be good ones. Empowering!

Functional pressure is super valuable. Want to go to bed earlier? Get up earlier, so it’s painful to stay up late. Want to have fewer things? Move to a smaller place, so it’s painful to hold onto the things you have. (Is the hope.)

My kid and two other students walked out of their rural, very conservative, public school for 17 minutes today. They were given two punishment options. They chose corporal punishment. This generation is not playing around. #walkout

Me: (Talk for 20 minutes about my career path and current job to a bunch of disinterested looking freshmen and sophomores.) Teacher: “The kids really like YouTube. Can you relate what you to do to YouTube?” Me: “...” Know your audience! Have an answer to “What’s in it for me?”

Signing PDFs through a website is a Kafka-sequence nightmare. Why am I scribbling erratically with a touchpad to seal a legally binding contract? What is happening right now?

I discovered this etymological chestnut today while Googling “willy-nilly” to make sure it wasn’t one of those secretly racist terms. Happily, it’s not, and better yet: Early 17th century: later spelling of will I, nill I ‘I am willing, I am unwilling.’

New kind of tricky email today: person forwards email from her boss that is all “Wow, Nate is so great, we gotta talk to that dude!” Then she’s like “My boss is super into you! So I thought I would reach out and see if you need consulting services for your AWS infrastructure!” 🤔
