Despite a rising number deaths of farmworkers from extreme heat in recent years (I wrote about one Oregon farmworker in THE HEAT WILL KILL YOU FIRST) there are still no federal heat safety standards to protect outdoor workers.

I really think this is terribly disruptive & inconsiderate to block a road like this. Don’t the people responsible for causing this know that people have to get to work, get to daycare to pick up kids? Someone needs to be held responsible! We must not tolerate this.

Yesterday, I went to a vigil for Efraín López García, a 29-year-old farmworker who died on the job on July 6, a day that broke global temperature records. He was one of 300,000+ people working outside in Miami that day without legal heat protections. 🧵 miamiherald.com/news/local/env…

If sharks disappeared it would be bad news for all of us. Why? -Sharks keep the food web in check. -Sharks could hold the cure for diseases. -Sharks help keep the carbon cycle in motion. -Sharks inspire smart design. -Sharks boost local economies. conservation.org/blog/5-things-…

My last piece for a while is an important one. Air conditioning isn’t the end of the story when it comes to heat stress. Get the whole picture with important context from Jeff Goodell here:

I say again: the health benefits of reduced air pollution would pay for the clean-energy transition on their own, even if climate change didn't exist. phys.org/news/2023-08-a…

A few months ago, I read a study that showed schizophrenia can be the most deadly preexisting condition during a heat wave. I was puzzled: Why would a mental illness make you more vulnerable to heat? That question led me to a young man named Stephan Goodwin. This is his story🧵

New York is underwater. THIS is the climate crisis. We need an all-out mobilization of our government and society to stop it right now.
