Jurors continue to deliberate in the Hawthorne trial. They have asked the judge multiple questions seeking clarification on some issues over the course of deliberations, which started Tuesday. And they asked this morning to review some video footage and a recorded phone call.

Jurors are still deliberating in Classie Hawthorne’s voluntary manslaughter trial in Stark Common Pleas Court. Around 3:30 p.m., jurors had sought clarification in a question to Judge Natalie Haupt about Ohio’s self-defense law, specifically aspects of the duty to retreat.

The Stark County Courthouse closes at 4:30 p.m. but Judge Haupt is allowing jurors to continue deliberations in the Hawthorne trial. Deliberations have spanned a full two days, which is noticeably longer than it takes for a verdict to be reached in most trials I’ve covered.

Jurors deadlocked in the Hawthorne trial after deliberating for 25 hours over the course of three days. The future of the case is unclear. A third trial could be pursued. Attorneys differed on whether the Stark County prosecutor or the Ohio Attorney General’s Office will decide.

Attorneys further discuss Classie Hawthorne’s bond and whether she will remain incarcerated pending a decision on whether a third trial will occur. Stark County Common Pleas Judge Natalie Haupt took the issue of bond under advisement and a ruling will be made in the future.
