I'll never top last year's estimate that mirrored the USDA estimate exactly. I think this is high, but we'll have to wait for the combines to run to find out.

While most plants seemed to have relatively “normal” (??) ear shanks, a small percent of plants had very long ear shanks, most noticeable when the ears turned down. Stalk and ear size overall seem very similar otherwise. So interesting!

Where did the yield come from this year? The average number of rows around the ears was identical to 2023, but each ear had approximately 5 more kernels in length. This translates to each ear being ~0.6 inch longer in 2024 compared to 2023 (on average).

Finishing up field things before harvest starts. Pulled flags, checked on Asian copperleaf, collected some plants to see how mature the seed is. #ISUCrops

I also found a lot of this and I’ve heard from many this summer that foxtails were more prevalent in soybean fields than in past years. #ISUCrops

Collecting waterhemp leaves and seed for a project today. I decided I’d try to help out and pull all the female waterhemp plants I found to help reduce seed additions in the field. Pull only females, save yourself ~50% of the work! #ISUCrops

Much like Meaghan Anderson, I'm on my own weed tour today. I am not collecting waterhemp seed, but I am doing my final tour of fields with confirmed Asian copperleaf infestations. This plant likes the light, growth in full sun vs. under the soybean canopy. #isucrops
