The Michener Center for Writers hosted faculty and MFA writing students for a reading featuring MCW Second Year Fellows last Thursday, October 6th on the J. Frank Dobie House’s Community Room stage.

It’s a small world for Michener alumni! Alejandro Puyana (MCW ’22) and Iheoma Nwachukwu (MCW ’14) were both in Norman, OK where they served as jury members for the 2026 Neustadt Prize. We love seeing our graduates after they leave The Michener Center.

Former MCW Director, Jim Magnusson, and RTF Chair and MCW faculty, Cindy McCreery, packed the house this past weekend at Austin Film Festival to share a reading of the pilot episode of SOAPY, based on Magnusson’s time writing a prime-time soap opera in the 80s.

Noah Hawley, screenwriter, author, and showrunner for FX’s hit Alien: Earth and Fargo, spent time with MFA writing students on Friday, October 31st during a Q&A hosted by The Michener Center for Writers.

Greg Cowles, poetry editor for the Book Review and senior editor of the Books desk at The New York Times, spent the afternoon on November 7th chatting with MFA writing students at the MCW’s Community Room answering questions about his job as an editor and the world of publishing.

MCW was well represented by multiple alumni at the 30th annual Texas Book Festival. Featured panel guests included: Donika Kelly (MCW ‘08), Darrow Farr (MCW ‘17), Rickey Fayne (MCW ‘22) and Carrie R. Moore (MCW ‘23), and Domenica Ruta (MCW ‘08).

MCW’s Director, Bret Anthony Johnston, introduced screenwriter and author, Noah Hawley, at the screening of Hawley’s Alien: Earth at UT’s Harry Ransom Center on November 12th. The screening was followed by a discussion and Q&A. Thank you to Noah an everyone who joined us.
