"Our editors selected a vast array of contributions from all over the country...but the work from North Carolina certainly stands out as poignant, purposeful & uncompromising." So honored to be one of three from NC. Thanks INDY Week. Outstanding review! indyweek.com/culture/page/b…

Fun fact: this is just not true. In 1964, Brooklyn CORE--who'd been challenging NY housing, school & job inequality with little change--called for a stall-in on highways to the World's Fair. White and Black moderates were horrified & wanted King to repudiate. King said no.

On Malcolm X's birthday, I think about him & Rosa Parks. They meet for the first time in 1963 because he puts out the word he wants to meet her. Courage needs courage; activists need other activists. He talked about 2 civil rights activists with awe-Rosa Parks & Fannie Lou Hamer.

You can't understand 1776 if you don't understand 1619. July 4, 1776 when the colonists declared independence, 1/5 of the population of the 13 colonies was enslaved. They would not gain freedom for a century. This, too, is the 4th of July. This, too, is the story of America.

Dear politicians/political influencers: When you evoke my father this #MLKDay, remember that he was resolute about eradicating racism, poverty, and militarism. And about corrective justice work. Don’t just quote him. Encourage and enact policies that reflect his teachings.
