It was fantastic to welcome the audience to our London Quaternary Lectures RHULGeography. This year, Danielle Schreve presented insights into palaeo-diets of Ice Age carnivores, whilst Neil Glasser discussed the latest cosmo data from fieldwork in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica 👏
We congratulate Alex Mattin on receiving the Philippa Holmes memorial prize for an outstanding MSc dissertation in sedimentology & stratigraphy & wish Alex the best of luck as he embarks on his PhD WellingtonUni with Simon Barker and Dr Holly Winton, funded by Marsden Fund 🎉👏
Well done Alex Mattin! Looking forward to having you join our team to investigate the climatic and environmental impacts of New Zealand supereruptions. 🌋 Marsden Fund WellingtonUni
📣 New paper out looking at the surprisingly subtle impacts of the youngest supereruption on Earth using distal pollen records. Proud supervisor with Stephen Piva producing the first of many from his PhD Marsden Fund Supervolcanoes 🌋 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jq…
📢Are you interested in studying the impacts of some of the largest volcanic eruptions on Earth? Thanks to Marsden Fund we have funding for a PhD project WellingtonUni to look at how three supereruptions changed NZ's landscape & environment. More details: simonjbarker.com/opportunities.…
Go check out my friend Jacqueline Grech Licari interview about her amazing PhD work on Tūhua! Cant wait to see what you find!!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Great article in the NZ Herald today about Stephen Piva's recent manuscript and the initial findings of our Marsden Fund research. Next step is to look in more detail at ice core records to see how this supereruption impacted global climate and the Southern Ocean.
I was thrilled on being awarded the 2023 President’s Award for Best PhD Thesis by the New Zealand Geographical Society. I could not achieve this without my amazing supervisors @GIShaun Kevin Norton and Andrew Mackintosh ❄️ and many others for all the support I've received along the way 🙏💟
Paper by Jiamei Lin et al. using polar ice-cores🧊: "The estimated stratospheric sulfate loading of the proposed Toba (YTT) eruption is 535 ± 96 Tg, which is [only] 6 times that of Tambora in 1815". sciencedirect.com/science/articl… #supereruption #Toba #VolcanicWinter European Research Council (ERC)🌋
CQR have arrived INQUARoma2023! Ready for a week of Quaternary Science. Stay tuned…we will be showcasing our highlights from our department RHULGeography on this account #INQUARoma2023 🦣
What a fantastic week INQUARoma2023 presenting the great work of Alex Mattin on locating the Oruanui supereruption signature in Antarctic ice cores. A bit ironic presenting ice core research in 43 degree heat! Marsden Fund
