I was lucky enough to see James Yancey Jones, aka Tail Dragger, perform last year at the Eastside Kings Festival in Austin, Texas. He was such a cool man, and had an unbelievable presence about him. He will truly be missed. RIP Tail Dragger Jones ❤️

#BreakingNews Journeyman Chicago bluesman Tail Dragger Jones is dead at age 82. In the 1970s, he performed with Howlin' Wolf who gave him his nickname. In 1993, Jones killed Boston Blackie after a dispute over payment. It wasn't until age 56 that Jones released his first album.

What a special night being able to catch up with Big T in Austin. He always has good stories to share, and of course, put on an amazing performance at the Eastside Kings Festival. I look forward to visiting with him again in Clarksdale next summer during my dissertation research.

Dr. Strait was an invited speaker at the 1st Andean Interdiscplinary Forum on Social Sciences, Humanities, & Education - hosted by Simon Bolivar University in Quito, Ecuador.  The ESI board also met with another university to build research networks 🌎

Congrats to Dr. Velvet Nelson on receiving an ORSP Individual Scholarship grant exploring the perceptions/experiences in travel & tourism for people with chronic health conditions. She is the sole author of the most popular textbook on tourism geography and a Fulbright Scholar 🌎

I passed my comprehensive exams and my proposal defense yesterday. This is me with my most amazing advisor that has worked so hard and patiently to get me this far. The research for my dissertation in Mississippi begins in one week. Advancing to a PhD candidate feels pretty good!

I’ve been in Clarksdale, MS all summer for my dissertation research, talking to community members trying to understand the decline and deterioration of the New World District. This was historically the Black part of town where the city’s blues and civil rights history took place.

We love seeing our alumni in the news! Geography alumna, Mandy Truman, is working on her Ph.D at Texas State University and was recently awarded a fellowship to do archival research at the University of MS. Her dissertation research stems from Dr. Strait’s blues field course 🎶
