According to the Russian ambassador to Turkey the country's banks have started "squeezing out" companies that are facilitating the transit of goods to Russia via Turkey. Their bank accounts are being closed or their transfers are being blocked. kommersant.ru/doc/6934096

Interesting interview with @SamuelJHirst about his new book, "Against the Liberal Order: The Soviet Union, Turkey, and Statist Internationalism, 1919-1939." Anyone interested in Turkey, the USSR, or interwar development policies should give it a listen. pca.st/f2n28dr2

More than anything, I hate how these years have cheapened and profaned our public, civic exercises. And sure, a lot of politicians are not good people, but the *pretense* was still valuable, the tribute bad men had to pay to our collective values. This is just...base. Vile.

A reminder: it is inspiring that people are willing to wait in line for hours to vote, but let's not forget that it is *100% unnecessary*. Making it easy for people to vote is a solved problem. Plenty of countries do it. We could do it. We choose not to. It's a choice.

Could any of my fine friends or followers recommend a good history of Ba'athism? Is there a good transnational history of the ideology and movement?

Remember when they dumped Osama bin Laden's body in an undisclosed location in the middle of the ocean, with no media coverage, so as to obviate his martyrdom and iconization? They've done a 180° with this guy. How long before we get posters and tee-shirts, Che-Guevara-style?
