Not only did early Italian immigrants *not* speak English, they didn’t even speak the same dialects! The Neapolitans and the Sicilians couldn’t speak to each other. They famously lived on different streets!

I am trying to reorient my PhD teaching away from “find the gap in the literature” to “find your place in the literature” it’s v challenging and rewarding to undo my own conditioning along the way 😵‍💫

This job asks for a cover letter, teaching, DEI, and personal statements. 1-2 pages each. So not including a writing sample or CV, 4-8 pages per app. Assuming a modest pool of 150 applicants: 600-1200 pages of reading. Not one person on the hiring committee is reading all that.

A reminder that white people started the same vicious lie about Chinese people eating dogs and cats after they emigrated en masse to the United States SPECIFICALLY to sabotage their upward socioeconomic mobility as a community since many of them were thriving as restauranteurs

While researching an upcoming piece on representations of the 🇩🇿 Algerian Revolution in various 🇪🇬🇸🇾UAR publications, I stumbled on these photos of Ben Bella and Nasser that I hadn't seen before, enjoy!

With all the lies being spread about Haitians, I want to share some books for those genuinely searching to understand our past. How did we get here? Why is Haiti time & time again the scapegoat for politicians & the media. These books are helpful. Education is a cure for hate.🇭🇹

while haiti is in the news so much this week maybe we should all take a moment to discuss the fact that their economic destitution is entirely due to being forced to spend ~80% of their federal budget every year for 150 years on reparations to france for freeing the slaves

So the fancy French daycare open from 8-3pm for 3200 is “language immersion” but the spanish-speaking daycare run by four Dominican women down the block that charges a little less than half that and is open regular hours is not. Obvi.

The August 1965 issue of Révolution Africaine (Algeria's 🇩🇿 revolutionary newspaper),confiscated by the authorities after Boumédiène's coup. The cover features images of the LA Watts Rebellion + invokes James Baldwin's "The Fire Next Time." (See Christian Phéline's recent book).

Worth noting that Walter Rodney was assassinated by a car bomb. The first functioning car bomb was used by Lehi in Palestine in 1947. One of the Lehi guys, Yitzhak Shamir, later became PM of Israel.
