The original Treaty 11 document is coming to the North. Treaty 11 was signed by the Crown and more than a dozen Indigenous communities in the Northwest Territories in the summer of 1921. cbc.ca/1.6109999 Liny Lamberink

A pilot project in the #NWT thinned 11 hectares of trees. It may sound counter-intuitive in the fight against #climatechange - but the goal is for the remaining trees to grow bigger and healthier.. and store twice as much #carbon as a result. cbc.ca/news/canada/no…

Steven Nitah, who helped establish the Thaidene Nëné Indigenous Protected Area, says N.W.T. peatlands are "globally significant" and provide a nature service that's "required to give us a fighting chance" in the face of climate change. cbc.ca/1.6273262

The N.W.T. is mapping carbon that's stored in the ground (soil, peat, permafrost) and above ground (trees, vegetation) that will inform future policy. The last and final installment of a series about sequestered carbon in the territory: cbc.ca/1.6275869

Drivers of #electricvehicles in #NWT say their cars start in extreme cold, but distance they can drive on a single charge can be cut in half. "The range anxiety ... will be a bit of a concern until there's more infrastructure for more people to travel." cbc.ca/1.6310194

Report commissioned by #NWT gov. says "reliable & convenient" network would have charging stations at 100 km intervals between #Yellowknife and Alberta border. cbc.ca/1.6313828

Squishing snow to keep permafrost cold? That's something researchers are testing out in the #NWT, saying it could become tool to keep permafrost thaw from damaging infrastructure. Props to Karli Zschogner for the help on this one. cbc.ca/1.6392751

Jimmy Oleekatalik and Joe Ashevak told me the sinking of the truck could have been avoided altogether had the expedition consulted with people in Taloyoak - b/c the route they travelled is known to be “very dangerous.”

"It’s scary that there are people with a lot of power in our government, who have decision-making power, who are actively working to not care about climate.” ollienwt/Cabin Radio cabinradio.ca/91162/news/env…

A good sign in Nahanni Butte, N.W.T. this morning. Water only rose about 2-3" on the South Nahanni River overnight, compared to the several inches it's been going up in past nights. The latest on how the community is preparing itself: cbc.ca/1.6485717

Jimmy Oleekatalik, the manager of the local hunters and trappers group, said he's happy the truck has been recovered. He was worried about the contamination risk it posed to local wildlife - incl. polar bears, narwhals + seals. cbc.ca/1.6568155

Knowing climate change is expected to exacerbate wildfires in Canada & air quality is going to get smokier, Dr Courtney Howard wants to see a policy that'll trigger clean air shelters — like what the Yellowknife Fieldhouse became in 2014 — automatically. cbc.ca/1.6576125

Forests are amazing. 17 per cent of forests in the N.W.T. — the portion that's considered 'managed' — absorb 4x more carbon dioxide than the entire territory emits, on avg. cbc.ca/1.6581463
