There is Mkumba, with high dry matter content, resistance to whitefly, cassava mosaic disease, cassava brown streak disease & yield of 20-25 tonnes per hectare. UG120156 and UG120193 are exceptional for boiling, making a flour-based meal and have high content for industrial use.

Through biotechnology, researchers at NaCRRI under the root crops program have developed cassava resistant to the brown cassava streak and mosaic diseases. This after earlier varieties could only resist disease for three years.

The cassava whitefly mainly spreads the two diseases. Once they attack the field, it can cause 100% yield loss. However, resistant varieties developed under this technology cannot be given to farmers until biotechnology crops are in place.

Nabuin ZARDI is one of the nine (9) Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institutes (ZARDIs) of the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO). Its coverage extends over eight districts in the Teso sub-region and seven in the Karamoja sub-region.

In the Karamoja sub region the districts are: Abim, Amudat, Kabong, Kotido, Moroto, Nakapiripririt, and Napak. The major crops grown are sorghum, maize, cassava, sunflower, sesame, millet, beans and groundnuts.
