Of all the wonky gates in all the world, this is my favourite. It can be a little hard to push open, and blimey you’re at risk of losing a leg when it crashes shut behind you, but you reach it through towering trees and it takes you out into the brightest autumn fields of gold.

Emigration became a common occurrence in Cornwall throughout the 19th & 20th centuries, with increasing numbers of young men - like miners and telegraph workers - heading abroad in search of new opportunities. This postcard shows the ‘weekly exodus’ of miners to South Africa.

These are my dreaming hills, peaceful and still before the day begins in earnest. I love the old farm buildings and the tiny chapel, the cows gathered in the lee of the wall, and beyond, the fields of gold and the spire of the church rising through the mist to meet the morning.
