I have this morning written formally to Cllr Cammy Day to call on him to step down immediately as Leader of Edinburgh Council. The Liberal Democrat group has also tabled an emergency motion for Tuesday’s Policy Committee to agree he must now resign.

While formal processes need to run their course, LibDems believe we need a full independent review of how the Council has handled the issues which led to Cammy Day’s resignation. We will move this amendment at the Policy Committee later today so any and all lessons are learned.

Congratulations to Jane Meagher, the new Leader of Edinburgh Council. The LibDem Cllr group looks forward to working with her. One point missed yesterday; Edinburgh Council now has, for the time first ever, both a female Leader and female Deputy Leader. A long overdue event.

Today, LibDem councillors in Edinburgh submitted a budget plan to halt proposed cuts to transition teachers and pupil support assistants for P1/P2. Education must be one of Edinburgh Council’s top priorities. We cannot cut these vital posts in our schools.

53 parent councils have written to Edinburgh Council to say we are not spending enough on road safety. Liberal Democrat councillors agree. It’s why our budget plan would take the budget for road safety to a record level this year.

I make no apology for driving a hard bargain in this year’s budget. LibDems are clear; any budget must - STOP proposed cuts to teachers and pupil support, and - INCREASE funding to tackle the backlog of road safety projects, especially around schools.

Very proud of what the LibDems on Edinburgh Council have just achieved. Thanks to us: ✂️ cuts to teachers + pupil support have been stopped ⚠️ There’s a record budget for road safety projects 🚗 SNP plans to cut money for road and pavement repairs have been blocked (again).

It took me 30 seconds to find at least ten postings from Zelensky directly thanking the United States for their support. There are many more. This is pure BS.

All of us in the LibDem group are heartbroken by this news. Val was kind and sincere, as well as being a hard-working councillor and passionate advocate for culture and the arts. Our thoughts are with our friends in the Labour group and with Val’s family after her sudden loss.
