On October 16, 1958, Pan Am Chairman Juan Trippe watches as First Lady Mamie Eisenhower christens Pan Am’s Boeing 707-121 named Jet Clipper America at Washington National Airport. 10 days later, Jet Clipper America would inaugurate jet service from New York to Paris.

Pan Am commenced scheduled air mail service 94 years ago on October 28, 1927 between Key West, Florida and Havana, Cuba. This was the first “official” flight in what would eventually become the greatest airline in the world. We know it as Pan American World Airways.

Boeing’s Bill Allen - “If you’ll buy it, I’ll build it.’ To which Pan Am’s Juan Trippe replied “If you build it, I’ll buy it”. The rest is history. The Boeing 747 was born.

One of our board members recently visited NAHF, a museum within a museum at the National Museum USAF, in Dayton, Ohio and took some pics for us. In 1970, Pan Am founder and longtime chairman Juan Trippe was enshrined in the National Aviation Hall of Fame. nationalaviation.org

Postmaster General James Farley handing Captan Edwin Musick the first piece of US Air Mail that would cross the Pacific aboard the China Clipper to Manila. This was was a great day for Pan American Airways.

On the loss of Captain Musick and his crew. - Needless to say, everyone connected with Pan American Airways is deeply grieved at the untimely fate of Captain Musick and his splendid crew. It is an irreparable blow to our company, and will be a distinct loss to American aviation.

It was truly an incredible aircraft. And Pan Am was the reason it was built.
