As many have said, the crackdowns threaten academic freedom and freedom of speech. But that doesn't fully capture what is happening and what's at stake.

The crackdowns are likely *discriminating* due to viewpoint—and perhaps on the basis of race, ethnicity, or religion. 1/

Those British newspaper columnists opining that student protestors in the US are the ‘end of civilisation’ might wish to consider whether this kind of massive overreaction by the police is something they really endorse.

This thoughtful thread by Timur Kuran gets us much, but not all, of the way there. I find it naïve in 2 respects: how sharply it separates speech from 1) disruption and 2) violence (1/6)

I’m horrified by the events at NYU and Columbia. The naked, fluorescent hypocrisy of institutions that have spent the last four years bleating about anti-racism and police reform sending in cops in riot gear to round up students the moment it’s convenient is appalling. 1/

Many thanks to Mandoline Rutkowski and Die Welt for covering Why Politics Fail, or should I say 'Warum Politik so oft versagt', and my thoughts on the state of global democracy.

Aveek Bhattacharya and I asked leading economists what they thought

The results are revealing:

🚨 New paper thread 🚨

2 in 5 Americans have medical debt. 18% have more than $2,500! In response, states & local governments have pledged $12 billion of medical debt relief.

We randomized $169 million of debt relief for 83,401 people between 2018-20.

Here's what we found:

Going to reverse-engineer my accidentally deleted tweet! The Conservatives seem to be speed-running the 1990s. Torn over Europe. Hectoring people on benefits. Baroque sex scandals. Interminable by-elections. But sadly no economic growth to make up for it.

Advice for scholars: next time you lecture on Kant and revolutions at “Downing” (Darwin College) Cambridge, make sure your hair is neatly tied and that you’re not blonde. Or else your research impact will be on the The Spectator libido section.

Incredible, brutal self-indictment by Draghi (although Trichet takes the biggest hit). Speech in Brussels yesterday. I’ve never seen anything like it from anywhere near the top of the ECB. And we just spent five years digging around. Extraordinary.

Sure Start worked. It had big long term effects on the educational achievement of poor children. Its demise is a study in policy failure - over centralisation, over extension, poor data, 'not invented here syndrome'. thetimes.co.uk/article/sure-s…
