At my alternative high school site, I am reading Jason Reynolds News Long Way Down with 4 of our boys. For each of them, it is the first book they will have read all the way through in their LIFE. 3 chapters left and beyond proud! #nontraditionalESOL

What the world needs more than sympathy and empathy is compassion. Sympathy: I'm sorry you're in pain Empathy: I feel your pain Compassion: I'll do whatever I can to alleviate your pain You don't have to feel other people's feelings. You just have to care about their feelings.

A few of our older HS students are reading this book with us in English. It will be the second book they will have ever read completely. Today, we read the “newspaper demon” part and laughed so hard our stomachs hurt. Thank you, Trevor Noah, for sharing your story with us!

My students and I LOVE this book. So many layers to characters and incredible writing. Going to use this idea of having students creating a visual/mind map of the floors, characters, and big ideas.

It's long past time to pay teachers more. When districts gain flexibility to raise teacher salaries, students improve in math & reading. Schools attract better teachers—and they put in more effort. The quality of our children's education depends on how much we value teachers.
