This really is crucial - I feel there is a growing belief, encouraged by some Con MPs and parts of the right wing press - that 'they' (foreign students) are taking 'our kids places'. This is not just wrong, it is upside down - 'they' are *funding* 'our kids' places.

It's depressing to see Members of Parliament embarrassing themselves on here about universities and the MAC report. We need a much higher standard and wider reach for basic stats, political science and citizenship.

But they do: collectively universities lose £1bn a year teaching home students and £5 bn a year on research which is not fully funded. The business model is a result of political decisions over a decade of frozen funding for UK students.

In 2019 inactivity among non-EU born residents was more than 5 percentage points higher than for UK-born; now they are *less* likely to be inactive.

It's great that people are trying to explain away 'misunderstandings' about the MAC report, but it's largely the case that you cannot get people to understand something that they don't want to believe ideologically.
