This is a day of mourning for me & all Taiwanese with the passing of our former President Lee Teng-hui. He laid the foundation for a democracy built on pride & our own identity, & his legacy will guide generations of Taiwanese to face the challenges ahead with courage.

We expressed our utmost gratitude & respect to former President Lee for his role in the Quiet Revolution that transformed Taiwan into a true democracy. He will continue to inspire us to protect our hard-earned freedoms with courage & perseverance generation after generation.

A great man has died: Taiwanese, Japanese-schooled, US educated, seriously Christian, Lee Teng-hui, chief architect of Taiwan's double advance to prosperity and democracy. 1st met him as Taipei mayor, under Chiang Ching Kuo, the dictator's son who favored Lee Teng-hui & democracy
