In a series of works on paper made in June 1968 Flanagan used sticky back paper, designed for children, to make collages. Highly abstract these improvised works sometimes contain syntax, using different forms of notation to give a poetic quality.

Flanagan made a series of sculptures from canvas, sand & resin in the late 60s & early 70s. These works changed ideas about the language of sculpture forever. '4 rahsb 2 '67', 1967 undergoing conservation at Rupert Harris Conservation.

Three plaster elephants for the work Composition, 2008 in the garden of Barry's Ibizan workshop. The anthropomorphism of the hare in Barry's work is extended to other animals, including the elephant, where it can be found performing a circus balancing act, with balletic hares.

"the use of a stretcher inevitably conforms to the conventional language of paintings, but the emphasis is clearly to do with the materials and substances, it is something to look at rather than to read." Flanagan in reference to 'aug 1 '69' (1969).

'pile 3 '68' currently on display in 'Ideas into Action: 1965-1980' @tate Britain. In the late 60s Flanagan's titles often came from the literal definitions of actions used in the process of making an artwork, stated by him as 'the business is in the making'.

Flights and beaches, two film works by Barry that make us think of summer; 'Atlantic flight' (1970) and 'line on holywell beach' (1971). Both filmed in colour Super 8mm and shown in 'Film show' at Situation Gallery, part of Prospect 71.

Visit our archive to see many press-cuttings including those on an artwork that generated a lot of column inches. 'Cambridge piece' (1972) was destroyed by university students egged on by the local vicar, whose letter in the press became headline news, ‘blow up revolting art!’.

In September '69 Flanagan travelled straight from his first exhibition at a public institution at Museum Haus Lange, Germany to NYC to create site-specific work at Fischbach Gallery. Whilst there he became friends with Eva Hesse, Richard Artschwager, Sol LeWitt and Lucy Lippard.

Lucio Fontana died on this day in 1968. Flanagan made a work dedicated to him at Galleria dell'Ariete, Milan, piling up leaves & gravel in the courtyard. Unfortunately, no photos exist of Flanagan's homage. Pictured is 'line 3 '68' (1968) which was also in the exhibition.
