New Netflix documentary "Tell Them You Love Me" Anna Stubblefield uses the long-ago debunked method of facilitated communication (FC) with a severely diabled man with cerebral palsy. Talking to herself through a keyboard (believing he was communicating), she falls in love with

Where are all the Anna Stubblefield sympathizers now? The defended her during trial, argued FC was legit, & rejected scientific evidence. No defending her now? No blog posts, online commentary, social media? Where are the advocates for the spelling to communicate version of FC?

Facilitated Communication is Not Science I actually testified about that. Stubblefield claimed to be an FC “master trainer.” Her mother contributed to the “Facilitated Communication Training Standards” and organized FC workshops, including at least one done by several Syracuse insiders. I still have my certificate.

Reminder to media folk on FC. The thing you call “controversial” involves physically manipulating disabled people, usually children, and defrauding the loved ones trying to connect with them—usually by professionals whose credentials say they know better and wouldn’t do that.

Pseudoscience isn't just incorrect—it can also be incredibly dangerous. This story is shocking and disturbing. The new @Netflix documentary "Tell Them You Love Me" unveils the bizarre case of Anna Stubblefield, a disabilities professor who deluded herself into believing in

Excellent piece on the dangers of FC and need for bioethicists to speak up. It’s not an esoteric issue. FC continues to put innocent people in jail and split up families. Gone? No. It’s growing again, hidden behind new names like “Spelling to Communicate.” thehastingscenter.org/bioethicists-s…

“In December 2020, Kevin Plantan’s nightmare began in earnest. On December 15, 2020, when SP was at home performing facilitated communication with one of her aides, she typed out allegations…” Another life shattered by false allegations made with FC: skepticalinquirer.org/exclusive/a-li…

Pioneer and absolute titan of special education, my friend Jim Kauffman, died this morning. Jim was faculty emeritus UVA, and spent his career promoting and defending specialized education. I’m saddened by his passing but grateful for our friendship. Good night, my friend.
