The theme of day three of the The NYG&B Society trip through was: politics and religion. We visited Delft where we learned about the Eighty Years' War, and about art and science. We saw the grave of William of Orange. The participants were even allowed to sit on the Royal benches.

For the second time I was standing next to a painting by my ancestor Gerard Houckgeest. Through his work the genre of church interiors developed spectacularly. This one hangs in Prinsenhof in Delft, where he lived and worked for a long time. #genealogy #familyhistory

During our visit to Oudewater we heard in Heksenwaag about the weighing of witches. In Gouda we learned more about cheese and - of course - we had a mini cheese tasting. Day 4 of the The NYG&B Society trip is over. One more to go! Tomorrow we'll be in Amsterdam.

On the 5th and final day of the The NYG&B Society trip we stayed in Amsterdam. In the morning we visited the City Archives, where we looked at documents regarding New Netherland and walked through the depot. In the afternoon we visited the house where Rembrandt lived and worked.

Life in an orphanage in Amsterdam in 1764. "We order'd the father to fasten the block to her legg with a padlock [...] and that he should give her daily nothing else but bread and water." That's what you get when you run away and behave in an indecent manner. #genealogy

Nowadays we often say that the Dutch language is strongly influenced by English. It is interesting to see that in the 17th century the court in Oldenzaal (Netherlands) used the word "dilay". One of the parties got a delay of 14 days before they had to answer the court. #genealogy

New Resource Announcement! The John Bowne House in Flushing has digitized the papers of John Bowne, the author of the Flushing Remonstrance at bownehouse.org/john-bowne-pap…. These documents will likely shed light on religious toleration, early Quaker history, and Anglo-Dutch relations

The key to exciting family stories often lies in hard-to-read handwritten documents. If you need help with transcriptions or translations of Dutch records, check out my website. antecedentia.com/transcriptions… #genealogy #palaeography

I'm back in Amsterdam! The next two days I will be traveling with an American couple. The lady has ancestors from the Netherlands and we will see the places where these ancestors lived in the 17th century . Always a pleasure to do! #genealogy #heritage

Today I took an American couple to Oldenzaal, a very old city in the east of the Netherlands. The lady's ancestors moved from there to New Netherland in the 1650s. We had guided tours of the city, the Palthe House and of the St. Plechelmus basilica. #genealogy #heritagetrip

On the second day of a heritage trip I organized for an American couple, we visited the Leiden region. We saw many churches, in Oegstgeest, Leiden, Valkenburg and Koudekerk a/d Rijn. In Valkenburg we stood at the location where the family lived in the 17th century. #genealogy

Next week I'll be in Boston. To attend the 36th International Congress of Genealogical and Heraldic Sciences, and to learn more about the Pilgrims. There will be enough time to meet fellow #genealogy professionals, who are APG members. Will I see you in Boston?

Today I read minutes of a meeting of deacons. They spoke about the use of the "elixir salutis" of Dr. Daffy. I had never heard of it, but apparently in the 18th and 19th century it was a kind of miracle potion, good for the treatment of all kinds of ailments. #genealogy

It was a great pleasure to officially open the #APGPMC 2024. Three days packed with classes about how to run a genealogy business. A great event, which makes me proud to be APG President!
