There’s a lot of talk about what health equity looks like from folks who don’t get to experience the oppressiveness daily. Spend one day trying to get someone care in the ER in the Bronx and you’ll see what tech can’t fix.

Living in a community is very different than being in community. Eating at a “local” restaurant doesn’t make you part of the fabric of the block. 🤷🏾‍♀️

We focus a lot on culturally competent care and what happens in the exam room. Some of the most egregious policies and harm happen at the admissions front desk and in the administrative offices. 🫠

Black Policy Lab was birthed out of the modern movement for Black lives as a way for our community members to be included in the policy-making process. Policy begins with awareness of our stories and journeys.

I also see why patients will tell us things that might not feel relevant to our specific team - I never know if info will make it through to the right person. The hospital room is a powerless space so the most control we can have is just repeating our priorities ad nauseum.

Lineage is an important part of equity work. Too often folks are quick to take up space without acknowledging who made it possible for them to be there in the first place.
