The term ‘Artificial Intelligence’ (AI) means many things to many people (see Table 1). (...) One meaning of ‘AI’ that seems often forgotten these days is one that played a crucial role in the birth of cognitive science as an interdiscipline in the 1970s and ’80s." 2/n

Brilliant paper! If you’re doing AI, please read it. It has a theoretical proof that the computation complexity class of general AI via machine learning is computationally intractable. That means that the time to find a general solution is at least exponential time or worse.

Is AI distorting our understanding of human cognition rather than enhancing it? Rethinking the role of AI as a theoretical tool in cognitive science may lead to true advancements. #AI #cognition #criticalthinking

"The history of AI is often told as the story of machines getting smarter over time. What's lost is the human element in the narrative, how intelligent machines are designed, trained, and powered by human minds and bodies." spectrum.ieee.org/untold-history…

Never mind the nonsense about whether gen-AI can generate good lesson plans; what's really worrying is its impact on the 'hidden curriculum'. What tacit social and cultural lessons are students going to absorb from their exposure to these privatised 'normalising machines'?

Iris van Rooij 💭 I was struggling during my Ph.D. and she spend a whole lunchtime at a conference talking me through the problems I was having. I will never forget her kindness and consideration.

companies embracing "AI" works like the opposite of advertisement for me. i quit a duolingo streak at 995 days because the website said "using the power of AI...etc" at me one time

I quit duolingo after they cut a bunch of jobs that they were hoping to replace with "AI". One of the best language-learning decisions I ever made

I have been told to stop stealing muffins from the bakery. Unfortunately, it’s the only way to keep my lucrative muffin stand in business. Everyone is fine with this.

Despite the hype, AI helpers could make you worse at your job. For BrainFacts.org I spoke with Nyalleng Moorosi, Lance Yong Jin Park, and Mar Hicks about automation bias, and how it can entrench the race and gender biases built into AI models. brainfacts.org/neuroscience-i…

“When the AI provided an incorrect result, researchers found inexperienced and moderately experienced radiologists dropped their cancer-detecting accuracy from around 80% to about 22%. Very experienced radiologists’ accuracy dropped from nearly 80% to 45%.”😮
