So Swarovski won me over, my new bins from the great team CleySpy! To anyone wondering if top end bins are worth it, remember, in the 19 years since I got my 1st pair of swaros they're worth the same now second hand as when I got them. In that time I've gone through...

Ficedula on Blakeney Pt today, very odd bird, very pale, lots of white in tail (including inner webs), apparent collar from some angles, think primary patch is inconclusive. Always on ground, never perching up, lots of wing flicking. Erring towards odd pied. Makes my head hurt

It's that time of year again when I desperately wish I was in Shetland, especially when remembering the occasion 8 years ago when a Lanceolated Warbler (found by friends Dave A & Stuart White) ran across my fingers...

There seems to be a bit of a migration of birders to Bluesky. I'll probably continue to post here for the time being but in preparation I've joined. bsky.app/profile/pterod…

Yesterday's planned Sheringham seawatch got ditched in exchange for a 'second for Britain' Pale-legged leaf warbler at Bempton. Occasional brief good views but as I had to be back in Norwich for early afternoon I didn't manage a photo.

Scilly birders... We're going to Bryher mid October and I just heard Olivia's Cafe is closed for the season and trying to work out logistics. Does anywhere else serve breakfast?! Scott Reid Will Wagstaff

The Siberian Stonechat at Cromer showed beautifully this afternoon. I managed to collect a faecal sample and gave it to the finder, should hopefully confirm this as a straightforward maurus. With Dr Phil Saunders 🇬🇧 🇪🇺 🌈 and James Lowen

Yesterday X (Twitter) decided, between adverts, to show me gory drone footage of a Russian soldier being blown up by said drone. Not what I, or most normal people want to see when looking at their feed. I'm giving it a few more weeks before I'm off to Bluesky only. See you there?

Been looking at the forecast for my first trip to scilly in 14 years! The fast moving warm front looks interesting. I'm like an over excited kid waiting for Christmas.

A beautiful first day on the Scillies, nice to see a few bits and pieces but the Blyths pipit eluded us late this afternoon.

First full day on Bryher. Very windy so bushes and trees were hard work but dotterel & hoopoe on the ground and the lesserlegs continued to show well. With Dr Phil Saunders 🇬🇧 🇪🇺 🌈 @MikeHoit Keith Langdon Peter Moore

Not much new on Bryher today. The Dotterel continued to show to less than 5m and a Merlin hunted nearby. The Hoopoe flew over our house while we were having lunch and pitched down on Tresco. Sadly no American passerines materialised 😞. Dr Phil Saunders 🇬🇧 🇪🇺 🌈 Peter Moore

A day off Bryher on St.Agnes for all things small. First stop Least adders tongue, the smallest fern in the UK (about 5mm) followed by a Little Bunting shortly after, appeared on the beach briefly, before disappearing and not being seen again.

Bird of the day was a Red-throated pipit, seen by Dr Phil Saunders 🇬🇧 🇪🇺 🌈 but sadly heard only for me as I was deep in cover. Best of the rest - more flyover hawfinches, a Rouzel, a late yellow wag, woodcock, black redstart. Popped to Tresco for an hour and saw Serins & 2 lesser yellowlegs

It's our 4th autumn in our house and chemicals and nutrients are low enough to get my first waxcaps in the lawn! Scarlet I assume but need to rule out Crimson.

Nice to get in on the Hawfinch influx with one right over the garden this morning while I was outside vismigging. Sounds recording here: macaulaylibrary.org/asset/625641795 #vismig #hawfinch

Despite the fairly useless photos, yesterday's Pallas's Warbler at Waxham was actually pretty showy and a delight to watch. One of my favourite birds!
