I think the basic underlying desire here is the absence of property rights. We can reconstruct this *feeling* and functional freedom through legal frameworks like public lands, easements, right to roam. But these are simulacra of true raw freedom from property rights.

Public donations by wealthy and successful was so critical to the ancient western world that historians have argued Rome fell because they ran out of space for donated triumphal arch’s and bathhouses. Probably not good we disdain successful ppl who donate today.
