The life of a project

Back a few months ago, people would ask me for advice if it's ok to walk back on a signed offer, when they got a better one. I told them that it's not much different to quitting on the spot. As a manager I'd much rather people walk back on the contract vs quit on the first week.

The vibe in tech has definitely changed in the past few months. Nearly everyone I know is keeping a pulse on the job market with plans to exit their current company within 6-12 months. A quick 🧵 on why this is happening, and what managers should consider doing about it.

Not too surprised that it's common for software engineers to move jobs frequently, given how easy it's to measure financial progress (aka "how much more do I make this year") and how difficult it is to measure "tenure" progress (aka "how easier can I navigate my organization").

Motivation is not willpower. When you really need to go to the bathroom, you are motivated to find a bathroom. You need willpower to restrain yourself to use the bathroom.🤣
