While it's hard to determine the exact age of a #SeaTurtle, most of them live 50+ years! They might not live as long as us, but they've been on Earth for over 110 million years! Help us spread awareness & lessen threats by becoming a #CoastalSteward: bit.ly/3XpRpsR

#SandDollars are animals, closely related to sea urchins. They use hundreds of tube feet to move & filter feed. When they die, they become hard star-printed discs. Remember when you see a sand dollar, it used to be alive! It's best to take nothing from the #beach but photos!

#HinduMythology says that the deity, Vishnu, was reincarnated as a turtle that carried the weight of the world on its back. To support this legend, studies have recorded 100 species living on a single #SeaTurtle, essentially making up one living ecosystem!

80% of plastic in the ocean originates from land-based sources. Our choices onshore have a massive impact on the marine #ecosystem. It's time to take a stand against #SingleUsePlastics! By REFUSING these items, we can significantly reduce the impact on our oceans & marine life.

Unlike sea turtles, #iguanas are the opposite of endangered & are even considered invasive. They are actually a #nonnative species & cause more harm than good. Therefore, controlling their population through state regulation is another form of coastal & marine conservation!

Have you ever wondered why sea turtle #hatchlings emerge from their nests in large groups? Their small size & the depth of the #nest make it impossible for a single turtle to break through on its own. They work together to dig their way up until they emerge!

Unlike their freshwater cousins with #WebbedFeet, #SeaTurtles have long flippers, perfect for traveling the strong ocean. They may not be the fastest swimmers, averaging less than 6mph. However, when frightened, they can showcase their remarkable agility by reaching up to 22mph!

👉 Feeding on soft-bodied prey, like #jellyfish, #leatherbacks have specialized spines that point backward down their throat to help them catch slippery delicacies. ⚠️ But beware, their alien-like mouths might be a bit scary to those who dare to search for photos online!

Leatherback sea turtles primarily feed on #LionsManeJellyfish, one of the largest jelly species in the world! While their sting can be extremely painful to humans, leatherbacks are able to gobble them up without flinching thanks to the #papillae lining their throat.

Sea turtles have a 22% chance of dying from ingesting just ONE #plastic item. It is estimated that 52% of sea turtles have plastic in their guts, most of which comes from land-based sources. By REFUSING to use #SingleUse plastics, we can reduce waste & inspire change.
