During the #SmyrnaHolocaust, Christians committed suicide in the Smyrna waters to avoid the cruel Turkish guards or the fire. After the fire was extinguished, Turks could be seen fishing for loot (jewelry, money) from the corpses laying under water. greek-genocide.net

Metropolitan Chrysostomos Kalafatis was the Metropolitan of #Smyrna from 1910-1914 and 1919-1922. On Sep 10, 1922, a day after Kemalist forces occupied Smyrna, Chrysostomos was handed over to a mob who subsequently tortured and murdered him. More: greek-genocide.net/index.php/over…

After Kemal's death in 1938, Greek dictator Ioannis Metaxas renamed Apostolos Pavlos Street in Thessaloniki to Kemal Ataturk St. He also used public funds to buy the home (which Kemal was supposedly born in) and gifted it to Turkey. More in our new book: amzn.to/43nDx5I
