January Progress Report: We are 41% of the way through January.

There’s a kind of magic in the silence that falls on your class when you reach the final pages of a book. We read for nearly an hour this afternoon to finish Kensuke's Kingdom. That ending always gets me.

I’ve got my first HT coaching group session of 2026 next week. Beforehand, we’re always sent a reminder and something to maybe think about. The question this time: how do you hold on to hope during tough times? I’m really interested in your answers to this. 😊🧡

I am a Head Teacher. When I teach, as I did this morning, it reminds me of what really matters. Helping kids learn and feel great.

I know this is brutally unfair, but the thought that some inspectors are working overtime and it has a detrimental impact on their well-being doesn’t chime any sympathy bells whatsoever in my stone cold heart. Welcome to my fucking world. No excuses chaps, remember.

Feel sorry for middle leaders at Neale Wade Academy who were asked to give up their ppas during the Ofsted inspection to do extra patrols for behaviour. This is why the visits are never a true reflection of what actually happens in schools. It’s a farce.

This kind of suggests we have never had any, never had any awareness or any strategies to support SEND. Training is great but time to plan, implement and meet needs would be better and that's more PPA and support staff, the one thing being slashed as school budgets are hammered

Wednesday observation: The marking pile’s breeding. Your coffee’s cold. The photocopier’s jammed. Again. You’re doing brilliantly, by the way.

You’ve almost survived January. The longest month in existence. The post-Christmas slump. The return of Ofsted season. The “Spring” term that’s basically winter with delusions. If you made it through this, you can make it through anything. Well done to us all.
