Quiz question from the Center for Rural Pennsylvania session at #PaLA2022: how many of the 67 counties in PA have more cows than people?

Galen Charlton (@gmcharlt) 's Twitter Profile Photo

From the audience, something identified as an issue affecting parts of rural PA: cryptocurrency "farms" disrupting actual farms (apparently including by high-pitched computer noises from the servers annoying farm animals???) #PaLA2022

Some population trends in rural PA: - most rural counties have more deaths and births - rural PA is aging; e.g., by 2030 47/67 counties are projected to have more seniors than youth #PaLA2022

Perhaps not the airport breakfast of champions, but this Lancaster County boy appreciates the childhood callback. Off home to Atlanta in a bit.

Long 🧵. Missouri SoS Jay Ashcroft is putting new rules in place that force libraries to preemptively censor according to his undefined standards. Let's deep dive. I AM WRITING AS AN INDIVIDUAL AND NOT SPEAKING FOR MY EMPOYER. Ahem. Link: drive.google.com/file/d/1QTr4tt…

Earth, 27 August 31,375 (Old Calendar Mark XXII): "Jones, we have done it! All questions of life, the universe, and everything have been settled!" "Cool! Oh, what about that old one about the proper interpretation of the 3M SIP2 specification? "Crap." #libtech

Ran across a neat resource today - a German-language handbook of library IT that was produced over a few days during a book sprint: it-in-bibliotheken.de #libtech #code4lib

I though it would be a cakewalk, teaching that naughty ebook a lesson. Until we discovered its special nature and super power... its encoding in EBCDIC!

You can work in a project for a long time and still be surprised. Example: at the #EVGILS Cataloging IG meeting, learning that Bin Lin of PINES, who is retiring soon, was the person who suggested "Evergreen" as the project's name. #evgils23

Also, major kudos to Elaine Hardy of PINES (also retiring soon) who has been a bedrock of the Evergreen and Evergreen cataloging community. #evgils #evgils23

Heading home from the Evergreen Conference. I've had a wonderful time, and it's been awesome and amazing to reconnect with folks in person! #evgils #evgils23

The fact that people today feel comfortable looking back at Y2K and laughing is because enough people took the problem seriously and fixed it before anything catastrophic could occur. It was a real problem, fixing it took real work. Even if many just remember it as a joke. 🧵
