Jesus had the habit of going to lonely/solitary places to pray, he would “spend the night alone at the mountainside”. . . 40 days alone in the desert, the night before the crucifixion in the garden of Gethsemane . . . If Jesus needed time-out for prayer in solitude, we need it.

Lectionary tweet: Rom 9 That’s leadership! PAUL, who’d rather be accursed than see Israel suffer! MOSES who’d rather God blot out his name than see Israel destroyed! John LEWIS, who’d rather risk life…Great leaders always care much more for others than they do for themselves.

Leonard Sweet taught me about sobremesa. The disciples worshiped around a round table and danced and sung in the middle. It is at the end of the meal where the conversation begins. Worship is not over until you had time to talk. Leonard Sweet

There can never be a culture-free gospel. Yet the gospel, which is from the beginning to the end embodied in culturally conditioned forms, calls into question all cultures, including the one in which it was originally embodied.

As Christians, in our disagreeing we must never dismiss or de-humanize another or we become ungodly. The trashing, demeaning, humiliating and labeling of others is horrifying and grieves the heart of our God.

Based on conversations with lots of leaders in different contexts and some informal polls, here is what I am hearing and seeing in terms of church re-gathering (in no particular order)

It is a terrible misunderstanding of the Gospel to think that it offers us salvation while relieving us of responsibility for the life of the world, for the sin and sorrow and pain with which our human life and that of our fellow men and women are so deeply interwoven.
