Greetings, Fiskites! This Black History Month, the Fisk University Franklin Library proudly celebrates the profound impact of Black artists, artisans, and creatives as we delve into the rich history and vibrant life and enduring influence of our campus artists and artisans.

Aaron Douglas, an artist and former art professor at Fisk University, was an African American painter and graphic artist during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. Douglas is known for his powerful images of African American life and struggles. #blackhistorymonth

Originating as a group of traveling students, Fisk’s world-famous Jubilee Singers set out from Nashville in 1871 to raise money for their debt-ridden school. Despite early struggles, their performances soon electrified audiences throughout the U.S. and Europe. #blackhistorymonth

Founded in 1926, Fisk University’s theatre group, the Stagecrafters’ first performance was Sophocles’ Antigone. They have occupied the Little Theatre since 1935 and continue to provide opportunities for the intensive study of plays and their production. #blackhistorymonth

The Carl Van Vechten Gallery was founded in 1949 to serve as a platform for African American art and to foster dialogue on the role of art in society. It owes its name to Carl Van Vechten, who was known for his support of African American artists during the Harlem Renaissance.
