Wouldn’t be surprised to see a few more major hurricane (cat 3+) solutions as time goes on. Ample energy in the Gulf (forecast track is along the Loop Current), coupled with divergence (spreading of winds) aloft will aid PTC 9. Rapid intensification is very much on the table.

New: PTC Nine has now become Tropical Storm #Helene. #Hurricane status is expected by tomorrow morning, then rapid intensification is very possible as the storm moves north through the Gulf. Landfall as a major cat 3 storm is anticipated Thursday evening in the #FL Big Bend.

Good morning to #HurricaneHelene, who is a category 1 storm as of the latest National Hurricane Center advisory. Now with 80 mph sustained winds, we could see #Helene rapidly strengthen to a high-end category 3, even a low-end category 4 right up until landfall tomorrow afternoon/evening…

UPDATE: the latest advisory from National Hurricane Center shows #Helene now strengthening to a 130 mph category 4 #hurricane by tomorrow afternoon. Storm surge projections have also increased since this morning, highest along the Big Bend coast. Posting an in depth forecast later today.

Trying to remember the last time I saw 15-20 FEET of storm surge in a forecast… For reference, here are the top 5 storm surge events from hurricanes in U.S. history (nola.com) -Katrina: 28 feet -Opal: 24 feet -Camille: 24 feet -Ike: 15-20 feet -Hugo: 20 feet

For reference, this is what a 19 foot storm surge looked like when I chased Hurricane Michael. This was Mexico Beach, FL. You can see why the word “unsurvivable” is being used to describe the potential surge from #Helene.

Here’s the latest info on #HurricaneHelene. Rapid intensification is expected heading into tonight/tomorrow, before an eventual landfall along the #Florida Big Bend as a category 4 storm.

This is what 12-18 feet of storm surge from Hurricane Ian did in Fort Myers Beach, FL two years ago... it swept houses away. The current maximum storm surge forecast for #HurricaneHelene is 15-20 feet. "Unsurvivable" is the only way to describe this.

BREAKING: #Helene is now a MAJOR category 3 #hurricane. Aircraft recon data has found 120 mph winds inside the storm. Helene is still several hundred miles from landfall, so there is still time for additional strengthening. #Florida #helene2024

Evan O'Regan (@evankfox_cbs) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Intense burst of convection in the eyewall of #Helene in looking at visible satellite. Safe to say rapid intensification is underway at this point. This will likely be a category 4 storm at landfall (125 mph cat 3 as of 5:00 PM EDT). Landfall within the next 5-6 hours.

Evan O'Regan (@evankfox_cbs) 's Twitter Profile Photo

BREAKING: #Helene is now an "extremely dangerous" category 4 storm per National Hurricane Center. Maximum sustained winds up to 130 mph at this time. Pressure is continuing to drop, and there is still room for further intensification, perhaps to a mid-high end cat 4, ahead of landfall.

EYEWALL OF #HELENE MOVING ONSHORE! An Extreme Wind Warning is now in effect for areas just east of #Tallahassee as Helene makes its final approach. This is where the major hurricane-force winds are located… damage in this area will be catastrophic.

BREAKING: #Helene makes landfall National Hurricane Center confirms at 11:10 PM EDT, Helene came ashore just east of the mouth of the Aucilla River as a 140 mph category 4 #hurricane.

Oh man… incredible video of the devastating storm surge from #Helene in Cedar Key, #Florida. Also a good reminder to please NEVER swim in storm surge waters. That is extremely dangerous.

Temperatures are still warm this afternoon, but slightly cooler compared to the last few days🌡️ Expect above average highs to continue through the next week, however we'll be in the mid-upper 80s Wednesday due to a backdoor cold front. Track our weather: cbs4local.com/weather
