Air pollution caused by wood-burning appliances in people's homes is responsible for more than €17 billion a year in health-related costs in the EU and UK. newscientist.com/article/231415…

Turf needs to stay in the ground where it can continue to do it's job of capturing carbon and stay out of people's lungs where it causes respiratory/cardiovascular and cognitive disease

Great interview but whereas cigarette smoke can be confined to your house..solid fuel burning smoke cannot. It goes up the chimney or stove flue and harms your neighbours. Exactly why smoking is banned in public places now. newstalk.com/podcasts/highl… via NewstalkFM

Do wood burners add to air pollution in cities? Yes, say citizen scientists Pioneering Bristol study blames the solid-fuel burners in people’s homes for breaches of World Health Organisation guidelines #AirPollution theguardian.com/environment/20…

A scathing report from England's chief medical officer has found that so-called "eco-friendly" wood-burning stoves produce 450 times more toxic air pollution than gas central heating.  #AirPollution #WoodBurning #health express.co.uk/news/science/1…

Unfortunately anyone in Ennis who has a new/retrofit house with heat recovery ventilation (MVHR) should also turn off their system during periods of high pollution. Otherwise these houses will constantly be drawing polluted air into their indoor environment.

Anyone who has been outside this evening will know by their senses that the polluted air levels in Ennis are dangerous and a health hazard. Here is the data to avoid any doubt. We need public health warnings, Met Éireann warnings and strict enforcement Clare County Council.

I've seen some motivated reasoning in my time, but the attempts at self-justification on Twitter in response to this article are off the scale. We should follow the evidence wherever it leads, and however uncomfortable it gets. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Home wood heating played a big role in #london's #airpollution last weekend, accounting for 60-70% of the soot being breathed. My latest for The Guardian. Data from Environmental Research Group Defra UK & @Jwheydon's research on weakness in existing rules. theguardian.com/environment/20…

Hard to overstate just how bad the polluted air in Ennis is tonight. It will result in exacerbated respiratory conditions - both acute and chronic, and without question, will put pressure on our health system and impact on each person’s health and quality of life. Clare County Council

Last Word 17.20. All solid fuels are dirty when burnt. And remember not every town in Ireland has air monitoring. So the invisible killers may be outside your door as you listen in.

Widespread support for a ban on home wood burning... "Poll for The Guardian ...67% of Londoners backed a ban, with 17% opposed & 16% saying they did not know. Across Britain, 44% supported a wood burner ban, with 36% opposed" Piece by Damian Carrington theguardian.com/environment/20…

One of the best visualisations of the annual and hourly patterns in air pollution seen across Ireland. Very clearly shows the huge deterioration in air quality on winter evenings caused by solid fuel burning In this context, it's not your car that's the problem, it's your fire🔥

It’s hard to communicate just how hazardous levels of air pollution can be. This IQAir table compares measurements in micrograms of PM2.5 per cubic metre with the US Air Quality Index & associated health risks. Last night in Ennis PM2.5 reached 417 µg/m3. Have a read.👇

“Residential heating with wood can lead to significant pollution, even in small villages. The emissions take place where people are living. Everyone – from young to old – is inevitably affected because we all breathe the same air.” #Health #AirPollution theguardian.com/environment/20…
