Something interesting I noticed as I was researching for a blog post. Sometime between 2:45 AM GMT and now, the trademark policy page of the WordPress foundation was updated with new language. New: wordpressfoundation.org/trademark-poli… Old: web.archive.org/web/2024092402…

RE: #WordPress #WCUS @Automattic (A8C) raised $1B in capital WP Engine (WPE) raised $300M Both companies generate > $400M in revenue. Could the latest controversy be related to financial pressures on Automattic from its investors? (1/x)👇

In reading two separate Cease and Desist letters, one looks like it was written by a professional law firm and the other looks like it was written by someone who went to the Rudy Giuliani Night School of Law held at Four Seasons Landscaping.

Schools, governments, emergency service websites, churches, non profits, healthcare websites. These are just some of the types of important websites Mullenwonka is exposing to security risks by blocking their sites from accessing .org. DANGEROUS, SHAMEFUL, WRONG.

Fun fact: Black Rock is a key investor in Automattic/WordPress. This is a bullshit stance and is going to ruin a great platform. And likely open Automattic up to class action lawsuits.

So If you think this is Matt against WPEngine, consider again that this is Matt against anyone he does not like. It does not matter if you are a small business working late (like tonight) to survive. #WordPress

“Listening and working hard to make things clearer” By changing their trademark clause in the middle of the night and using customers/users as cannon fodder in their petulant pissing contest?

WP Engine's access to WordPress./org plugins is blocked, however: 1. With WP Engine's Local I can pull down my site and update plugins locally 2. WP Engine environment and backup system allows me to test updates, or roll back mistakes Compete with better product, Automattic

My non-WP husband: “I’m sorry, I didn’t realize how quickly it was escalating. I just didn’t think he’d do anything that would put the livelihoods of so many people who have spent thousands of hours supporting his project at risk.”

Man, more and more people just openly coming out and saying it’s all extortion sure is something. WP Engine has been too successful, so pay up (to the for profit company, no less, not the core) or we hurt your users…

Matt: WPE don’t contribute enough. I will destroy them. People: Sure, but they aren’t actually required to, right? Matt: It’s a licensing issue! My mum’s confused! People: What exactly are they doing that’s against the license? Matt: They’re not contributing enough! 😳😳

Matt openly admits it's a personal vendetta, and extortion. And that he'll happily use WordPress users/developers (who did nothing but choose a hosting service he doesn't own) as leverage in his own personal tantrums? What a way to show he cares about the community.

So, in the last couple of days, Matt Mullenweg has simultaneously accused WP Engine of “extracting too much value” from WordPress, while also bragging about his obscene wealth… In no world has he contributed as much as he has extracted from the community.

Wild theory: if Automattic had an actual trademark infringement case against WP Engine, they'd have started with a c+d letter, then filed a legal complaint, then participated in arbitration I believe the technical term for what they're doing now is called "pounding the table"
