The solution, step 1: Ask yourself what *exactly* you are posing as. I don’t mean “good enough” or “smart enough” or “talented enough” but REALLY what does a successful person in your field actually LOOK like?

Then ask yourself if you would *want* to be that person. Not whether you want their success, but whether you want to look & act like them in everything you do. My guess is also no.

If your answer to both of those is no, I will ask you to tell me why you are interested in doing research on Indigenous Peoples/communities. Think about your response carefully. Your why tells me & others just about everything I need to know. 2/

Dr. Dr. Desi (she/her) (@native4data) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Did you read something about how bad things are for Natives & think, "Wow there's a "novel" research idea, I should fill that gap!"? Instead perhaps ask yourself, am I the right person to fill that gap? A key thing we aren't taught in grad school is critical self-reflection. 3/

Dr. Dr. Desi (she/her) (@native4data) 's Twitter Profile Photo

I'm not saying non-Indig folks can't do research about Indig Peoples. But your "why" needs to be good. Real good. And you need to understand & communicate your positionality as a non-Indig researcher from the start. If you haven't done that, then don't do this research. 4/

Autistic meltdowns aren't what most people think. Can it look like a person kicking, screaming, and thrashing around because something happened that was upsetting or unexpected? Yes, absolutely... \1

Huge thanks to Susan Little, Pallavi Anand (she/her), and other conveners for inviting us to share our Autistic Voices in Geoscience project this morning. An excellent session on 'Initiatives to advance diversity, equity and inclusion in geochemistry' #Goldschmidt2023.

Incredibly heartwarming to see initiatives that amplify autistic voices in geoscience! As the mother of a 6yr old boy on the autism spectrum who loves rocks & wants to become a "rocky scientist," Seeing efforts to embrace neurodiversity fills me with joy & a great sense of hope!
