When humans showed up New Zealand's fauna was dominated by birds- moas, kiwi, giant eagles. Seemingly, mammals never got there. But ~17 million years ago, there's a weird, primitive little mammal in NZ (!). Apparently it was outcompeted by birds for terrestrial niches. Wild.

Heartbroken to learn of the death of my friend Don Symons, brilliant, witty, & kind anthropologist who illuminated human sexuality & deserves credit for the key idea behind evolutionary psychology: natural selection shaped our desires, not our behavior.
