For decades, Delft was carved in two by a monstrous and deafening train viaduct, until they decided to bury the tracks in the early 2000s. Rather than fill this space with motor traffic, it was allocated in a much more humane manner: for trams, trees, terraces and active travel.

While most public transport agencies think their job begins and ends at the turnstile, Dutch railways are a door-to-door mobility provider. The result: 90% of train travel is part of a larger multi-modal journey—enabling users to move seamlessly across the country without a car.

After a devastating flood in 1957, the Túria River was diverted south of Valencia. When plans to fill the dry riverbed with a motorway were luckily rejected, it was turned into a 10 kilometer, 123 hectare park—which forms the recreational, social and biophilic spine of the city.
